GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Quality Technician/Safety Coordinator is responsible for ensuring Sun Gro’s quality practices are adhered to at the site they support as well as external agency requirements.  This is done by following the steps outlined in the SQS Manual, conducting lab tests on raw materials, in-process components and finished products.  The Quality Technician must consistently monitor product quality to ensure compliance with standards and specifications.  Data is collected and reported to ensure consistent product is produced and verified.

Safety Coordinator is responsible for the administration and coordination of the site safety program.  To provide support and direction for the Joint Health & Safety Committee and the site leadership on health and safety matters.  To be knowledgeable of the applicable Federal and State OSHA regulations as well as local requirements to provide guidance to the site as needed.  Manage the health and safety training program at the site.
 
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Quality
  • Understand and accurately follow the SQS program and its requirements
  • Work with operations employees to complete raw material, in-process and finished product testing per SQS Manual
  • Understand and follow the appropriate protocols (escalation) when materials fail to meet expected quality parameters
  • Test finished product at the start of a run and throughout to ensure consistency
  • Collect or create samples as required by Technical, Regulatory or other teams
  • Calibrate testing equipment as required by SQS Manual
  • Assist in plant/mix line calibration as requested by operations
  • Collect retain samples as required by SQS Manual
  • Train employees in performing receiving, in-process and finished product testing as required
  • Enter test results into SG database Navision quality module and provide to approved parties e.g. Grower/Technical Specialist data as requested
  • Assist Grower Specialist and Operations with claims resolution
  • Participate on Plant-centric teams to provide insight into quality issues in a timely manner
  • Work with Regional Technical Specialists to ensure proper quality specifications are maintained and escalate any quality issues that do not fall within proper specification
  • Complete Audits Yearly.

Health & Safety
  • Be the resource for all the HS&E throughout the site.
  • Responsible for assisting in identifying potential health, safety, and environmental hazards, and work with the corporate HSE manager on training or process improvement required to reduce the hazard.
  • Assist with the development of training and education programs for staff around HSE.
  • Work with site leadership to ensure all site policies are in place and adhered to.
  • Work with the Corporate HS&E Manager to ensure all HS&E and Sun Gro safety training are completed.
  • Support and assist in implementing corporate safety action plans, and business plans.
  • Participate in Site Safety meetings to keep informed of all site operating functions and priorities.
  • Assist management with root cause analysis (RCA) investigation. 
  • “Lead” the Safety Kick-Off and drive consistency throughout the site.
  • Assist in monitoring the IMS system entries input by the location, and work with other IMS Operators in managing and escalating incident submissions.  
  • Assign and monitor health & safety training topics consistent with OSHA and corporate safety requirements
  • Monitor federal, state and corporate safety standards and requirements and provide site management with relevant information.
  • Establish and lead safety committee team
  • Complete Audits Yearly.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
 
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1 – 3 years experience in production of soils or related industry

 
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • Walking, sitting, standing required for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to smell, hear and see
  • Ability to touch and feel
  • Ability to work shift work
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interpret tests results to others

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
 
  • Environment can be dusty and loud at times
  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions are possible and temperatures can be either hot or cold, depending on the site
